A lecturer from Osun State University’s Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Prof. Olufemi Akanni, has urged graduates from Elizade University, Ondo State, to adopt Artificial Intelligence in their practice. He addressed 28 new graduates at their induction ceremony, delivering a lecture entitled ‘Medical Lab Science Practice in the Era of Artificial Intelligence.’
Prof. Akanni encouraged the graduates to enhance their skills with AI, noting its numerous benefits for healthcare. “Embrace AI for better healthcare outcomes. Artificial Intelligence will not replace Medical Laboratory Scientists, but those who use it will surpass those who do not,” he stated.
He outlined four responsibilities for the new inductees: uphold professional ethics, adhere to quality management systems, engage in continuous professional development, and promote the field of Medical Laboratory Science.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Philip Oguntade, represented by Prof. Joseph Fabayo, commended the graduates for their hard work and perseverance. He highlighted the critical role of Medical Laboratory Scientists in providing reliable scientific information that influences clinical decisions and improves patient outcomes.
Dr Donald Ofili, Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, emphasised the importance of accountability and adherence to professional standards in laboratory practice, reflecting public confidence in healthcare.
Dr Folorunso Dada, Acting Head of the university’s MLS Department, announced a historic achievement with a 100% success rate in both the first and final professional examinations, with eight graduates attaining first-class honours. He credited this success to the dedication of students and support from faculty and parents.
He encouraged the new professionals to work collaboratively and maintain respect for all healthcare workers, avoiding rivalries within the industry.
