British counter-terrorism police are investigating a major incident near RAF Fairford, a US Air Force base in Gloucestershire. Several men have been arrested on suspicion of explosives offences.
Police confirmed that Army bomb disposal experts are examining vehicles in the area and that a cordon has been established, with authorities believing the situation is “contained.” Villagers from nearby Whelford have been evacuated to a local leisure centre as a precaution.
The investigation, led by the counter-terrorism unit, was reported by multiple UK media outlets, including the BBC and Sky News, although this has not yet been confirmed by the French press agency AFP.
Government spokespersons have praised the quick response from emergency services, with Defence Minister Wes Streeting expressing gratitude to the teams on the ground. He reassured the public that the situation was being managed effectively.
No personnel from the US Air Force are believed to be involved, according to the 501st Combat Support Wing, which operates from Fairford. They stated they are coordinating closely with UK officials to ensure the safety of both military and local communities.
Local MP Roz Savage described the incident as “worrying” but noted that police believe the situation is under control.
This incident follows increased concerns regarding the activities of hostile foreign states, particularly Iran and Russia, accused of using proxies to conduct criminal actions in the UK. Reports indicate that British military sites were targeted by drones over 300 times in the past year.
