A Mexican judge has sentenced three men to 158 years and nine months in prison each for the murders of Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, and their American friend Carter Rhoad. The trio was killed during a botched robbery of their truck on a secluded beach in Baja California in 2024 while on a surfing trip.

The shocking murders resonated globally, particularly in Australia, as the area is typically seen as safe from the violence that plagues other parts of Mexico. The guilty verdict was delivered last week, with Debra Robinson, the mother of the brothers, stating in court that their killings had robbed her of the future she had envisioned with them.

The convicted men are known only as Jesús Gerardo, Irineo Francisco, and Ángel Jesús due to legal restrictions. Last November, the girlfriend of the alleged ringleader, Jesús Gerardo, who is also referred to as “El Kekas,” was sentenced to 20 years for her role in the robbery.

During the trial, it was revealed that the bodies of the victims were discovered dumped in a well with gunshot wounds to their heads. The murders deeply unsettled locals and tourists in Ensenada, highlighting the senselessness and brutality of such violence.

Ensenada is known as a friendly destination for surfers, but these murders underscored the ongoing issue of extreme violence in Mexico. Authorities explained that the surfers, all in their early 30s, were victims of circumstance, killed simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The killings occurred just 36 hours after the trio entered Mexico from the US, while their bodies remained undiscovered for another week until their families could identify them. In light of this tragedy, local surfers have called for increased security for both residents and visitors, as tourism is vital to the Baja California economy.
