Russia is intensifying its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as winter approaches, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He reported that the latest assault represents one of the largest campaigns against Ukraine’s energy sector since the onset of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.
In a statement on social media platform X, Zelenskyy highlighted that over 15 vital power generation and transmission facilities had been targeted across various regions. Efforts to restore power are underway, with Ukrainian energy companies actively engaged in repairs. He warned that Russia aims to deprive millions of Ukrainians of electricity and heating during the cold months, calling on Allies to pressure Moscow to halt these attacks.
The Russian Defence Ministry claimed responsibility for multiple strikes on infrastructure, including an electricity substation in Zhytomyr and steelworks in Kryvyi Rih and Zaporizhzhia, stating those facilities contributed to the Ukrainian military’s supply chain. Additionally, an airstrike in Kherson killed an ambulance driver and injured 19 others, including a child. Russian media also reported casualties from Ukrainian drone strikes in Belgorod, where a woman died.
Zelenskyy also condemned US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to waive new sanctions on Russia, stating that this would only embolden Vladimir Putin to continue his aggressive actions. Trump signed an executive order that postponed significant US sanctions aimed at cutting Russia’s energy revenues, which had been scheduled to take effect shortly. This decision sparked criticism from Zelenskyy, who expressed concern over the lack of pressure on the Russian regime.
The contrast in political stances has raised questions about US support for Ukraine as Trump increasingly criticises Zelenskyy.
