Dr. Alfred Veenod Fullah, Chairman of the Sierra Leone Advocacy Movement (SLAM) – Global, announced that the organisation aims to enhance the voices and welfare of the Sierra Leonean people. He made the remark at the launch of SLAM – Global in Virginia, USA, on 19 September 2026, where a large crowd of Sierra Leoneans gathered to celebrate the occasion.
Attendees travelled from across the United States and Canada to support the UK-based organisation, which has gained recognition since its inception two years ago. Dr. Fullah clarified that SLAM – Global operates independently of any political party, stating it is neither aligned with the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) nor the opposition All People’s Congress (APC).
“SLAM was formed not just to add to Sierra Leone’s civil society landscape but to provide a platform for the voices of Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad,” he explained to the audience. He emphasised that SLAM – Global is committed to addressing the struggles of those facing hardship, injustice, or lack of opportunity.
Since its establishment, SLAM – Global has issued public statements, conducted policy analyses, and engaged in international advocacy concerning democratic accountability, electoral integrity, human rights, and the stability of national institutions.
In his keynote address, Dr. Fullah stressed the importance of listening to the voices of the vulnerable and maintaining principles of trust, unity, and social justice. He highlighted that democracy should respect dissent, stating, “If I only respect your freedom when you praise me, then I do not believe in freedom.”
He urged members to avoid political convenience and to support those facing injustice within their own community, reinforcing that SLAM – Global is not a political party but a movement committed to the welfare of all Sierra Leoneans.
Addressing the Sierra Leonean diaspora, he called for their engagement in shaping a better future for Sierra Leone, stating, “We must become a source of ideas, accountability, knowledge, and hope.” Dr. Fullah concluded by encouraging attendees to live the principles of SLAM – Global as a responsibility, not merely a title.
The event marked a significant milestone for the organisation, highlighting its mission to amplify the concerns and voices of the ordinary Sierra Leoneans.
