Estonia Blames Russia for Arson Attack on Defence Firm
Estonia’s national security agency, Kaitsepolitseiamet, has attributed an August arson attack on Milrem Robotics in Tallinn to Russian security services. The agency described the incident as a “deliberate and pre-planned act” aimed at undermining Estonia’s security.
In a statement, Kaitsepolitseiamet noted that the attack’s methods are consistent with previous acts of sabotage linked to Russia throughout Europe. It highlighted that the Russian security services have targeted companies involved in defence and drone technology since the outset of the conflict in Ukraine.
Kaitsepolitseiamet’s assessment was based on intelligence analysis and cooperation with international partners. Since the beginning of the war, they have apprehended over 20 individuals involved in similar attacks orchestrated for Russia, indicating a wider campaign aimed at displaying Russian hostility across Europe.
Estonia remains committed to maintaining its security, with its agency asserting that the threat of Russian activities designed to destabilise society and weaken support for Ukraine will remain high for the foreseeable future. They are reinforcing physical and cyber security measures within key sectors.
Other regional leaders echoed Estonia’s concerns, with Lithuania’s foreign minister, Kęstutis Budrys, condemning Russia’s actions and emphasising solidarity with Estonia. Sweden’s caretaker prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, labelled the allegations “extremely serious” and reiterated that Europe must respond unitedly against such threats.
As tensions rise, NATO leaders are convening to strengthen defences in the region, aware that such acts aim to intimidate and divert support for Ukraine during the ongoing conflict.
