Africell Sierra Leone and Street Child have announced the 13th Sierra Leone Street Child Marathon, set for Sunday, 25 October 2026, in Makeni. The launch took place on Tuesday, 22 September, at Africell’s headquarters in Wilberforce, Freetown, with representatives from both organisations and the Sierra Leone Athletes Association in attendance.
This year’s marathon will feature four categories: 5K, 10K, half marathon (21K), and full marathon (42K).
Africell Media Manager Abdul Karim Sesay expressed the company’s commitment to Street Child and its efforts to enhance children’s lives nationwide. He highlighted the marathon not only as a sporting event but also as a symbol of concern for children’s education and empowerment. Africell will provide technical, media, and graphic design support to promote participation.
Emmanuel Kelfa Kargbo, the Country Director of Street Child Sierra Leone, noted that the marathon helps raise awareness about the challenges children face in accessing education. Street Child is close to completing 55 schools across the country to improve educational access and has already registered over 1,000 participants ahead of the official launch.
Kelfa Kargbo encouraged all ages and abilities to join, emphasising that walking is also an option. He mentioned the difficulties some children face in reaching schools, including crossing rivers and walking long distances, further stressing the need for greater educational opportunities.
Ibrahim Moses Kargbo, National Race Manager of the Sierra Leone Athletes Association, praised the marathon for promoting athletics and healthy living. He reflected on how young athletes have developed through this event, with some even competing in the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
John Konteh, Marketing Director of Afrimoney, called on the public to participate, highlighting the marathon’s role in promoting health and supporting children’s education. Registration is available through Afrimoney by dialling 1614# with a code of 760817, with fees set at Le40 for the 5K and increasing for longer distances.
The marathon is expected to encourage a healthier lifestyle while aiding Street Child’s mission to support children’s education.
