Former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma returned to the country on 6 September 2026 after the government dropped criminal charges against him. His return has been welcomed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with calls for national reconciliation and unity.

Koroma expressed his commitment to fostering peace and advancing Sierra Leone’s development. His homecoming carries significant political weight, particularly for the All People’s Congress (APC) party.

Many Sierra Leoneans draw parallels between Koroma’s journey and biblical narratives of return, such as that of Moses. While these comparisons should be made with caution, they highlight themes of leadership, forgiveness, and the complex dynamics of political life.

Before becoming president, Koroma faced challenges, receiving only 22.35% of the votes in the 2002 election and leading the APC to victory in 2007 after years in opposition. However, his time in office was marred by crises including the Ebola outbreak and a devastating mudslide.

After leaving office in 2018, Koroma’s party entered a period of uncertainty and internal strife, with questions about leadership succession and legitimacy overshadowing its unity. The APC must now focus on proving it can govern itself effectively before it can regain power.

Koroma’s return is seen as an opportunity for the APC to heal divisions and foster collective governance instead of personality-driven politics. He should act as a supportive elder rather than a figure attempting to dictate successors.

The warmth of his welcome, particularly in Makeni, reflects the deep emotional ties many still have with him, but it is essential that this be managed wisely. Celebratory moments must not turn into demands for unity around a single candidate or faction, nor should they diminish the voices of those who opposed him or faced difficulties during his absence.

Koroma’s return, while significant, is not a blank cheque for his authority over the party. Instead, it is a chance to move from unresolved grievances to a constructive future. The APC must navigate its internal issues with integrity to rebuild trust and function effectively.

As Sierra Leone moves forward, the lessons from the past need to inform its future, fostering reconciliation without being bound by historical conflicts. The nation must champion dialogue and cooperation as it faces ongoing challenges.

Koroma’s return could serve as a pivotal moment if it leads to a renewed commitment to national unity and institutional integrity within the APC and beyond.
