The Bayelsa State Government has refuted claims on social media about a bridge collapse on the Nembe-Brass road project, stating that construction is proceeding according to approved designs.
Currently, the first phase of the 21-kilometre road project is approximately 85 per cent complete, with expectations for completion in the first quarter of 2027. This road is intended to enhance connectivity for riverine communities.
During an inspection of the site on Saturday, Works and Infrastructure Commissioner Moses Teibowei and Information Commissioner Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai addressed the controversy surrounding the fifth bridge on the route. They asserted that the claims originated from a Facebook post and have sparked significant social media engagement over the past week.
Teibowei dismissed the allegations of a collapsed bridge column, clarifying that work is ongoing in preparation for beam installation on the final bridge. He stated, “It’s essential to correct the misinformation circulating. There has been no collapse; the columns are intact.”
He noted that the necessary equipment for the next construction phase is already on site, with the stone base and road stabilisation work reaching the project’s endpoint near the St. Nicholas River. Teibowei assured that the project adheres to high-quality engineering standards, with materials tested to ensure compliance.
“The quality of materials and equipment is top-notch, and we are following the design created by consultant Prof. Beredugo,” he explained, expressing confidence that the road will be completed as planned.
Koku-Obiyai urged the public to ignore what she called false claims about the project, emphasising her frequent visits to the site since construction began. “What is portrayed on social media does not reflect reality,” she insisted, reaffirming that the Nembe-Brass road remains a priority for the Governor Douye Diri administration.
Joseph John, Assistant Manager of Setraco Nigeria Limited— the company responsible for the project—also denied the collapse claims and assured residents that the project is on track without funding issues. “This is fake news; we are committed to completing our work on time,” he said, adding that everything is progressing according to plan.
