Phebean Jaia, a resident of Freetown, is struggling with significant pressure from her grandmother to undergo Bondo initiation, a traditional practice she has always opposed. Raised in Macca, Pujehun District, by her grandmother, a respected member of the Bondo society, Phebean has been subjected to repeated appeals to follow in her grandmother’s footsteps.
Despite her grandmother’s wishes, Phebean firmly refuses to participate in Bondo initiation or female circumcision, a position she has maintained as she has grown older. Her husband supports her stance, which has led to increasing tension during her grandmother’s visits to their home in Grafton. Phebean believes her grandmother and mother are conspiring to ensure she undergoes initiation.
In May 2026, during a visit to Macca, Phebean encountered escalating pressure. After an argument at a community water stand, a woman became angry with her and insisted that she must undergo initiation as a condition for an apology. This demand, along with the arrival of other women chanting traditional songs, left Phebean terrified. With her husband, she managed to escape to Jendema Police Station, where they reported the incident and sought medical help.
The altercation has left Phebean feeling unsafe in both Freetown and Macca. She is disturbed by the growing social pressure in her community, where many friends are Bondo members and where she has faced ridicule for her refusal to participate. Phebean feels increasingly isolated and caught between her family’s expectations and her desire to avoid unwanted traditions.
Though she respects her grandmother’s cultural beliefs, Phebean asserts that the ultimate issue is her right to make decisions about her own body and future. The distress caused by her grandmother’s pressure and the recent incident has led Phebean to consider leaving the community to secure her safety and that of her family. Ultimately, she hopes to live free from the threat of coercion regarding traditions she does not wish to uphold.
