The Director General of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), Chernor Mamoud Jalloh, and Deputy Director General Mohamed Bangura, along with senior officials, recently visited the newly appointed Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, at the Ministry’s Headquarters in New England Ville, Freetown.
During the meeting, they provided a comprehensive update on NASSIT’s current programmes, operational priorities, and planned reforms. This was an opportunity for NASSIT to outline its work plans and seek closer collaboration with the Ministry, which oversees policy direction for the Trust. They emphasised the importance of aligning NASSIT’s programmes with the Government’s vision for the labour and social security sector.
Both parties recognised the need for stronger coordination to implement policies that enhance social protection and improve workers’ welfare. NASSIT highlighted ongoing efforts to increase coverage, improve service delivery, and reform the pension and social insurance systems to better serve both formal and informal workers.
Minister Koroma welcomed the delegation, praising NASSIT for its commitment to its mandates and reform agenda. He expressed readiness to work together, stressing that a coordinated approach between the Ministry and NASSIT is vital for achieving meaningful and sustainable reforms.
Koroma committed to ensuring the effective implementation of reforms and initiatives aimed at expanding social security protection nationwide. He underscored the need to protect vulnerable informal workers while enhancing administration and accountability in the formal sector, ultimately improving coverage and livelihoods for all Sierra Leoneans.
Both NASSIT and the Ministry reinforced their commitment to collaboration and accountability, aiming to enhance institutional efficiency and promote inclusive social security coverage. This meeting further solidified the partnership between the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security and NASSIT, marking a significant step towards a more responsive labour and social security system that supports economic development and improves the welfare of citizens across Sierra Leone.
