The atmosphere at Makeni Central Mosque shifted quickly from prayer to excitement as former President Ernest Bai Koroma arrived for Friday prayers. His presence drew a diverse crowd, from the elderly to children and those dressed in both rags and finery, as they eagerly sought to catch a glimpse of him after years away.

Koroma, joined by notable figures like Mayor Abu Bakarr Kamara and Dr. Mohamed MB Sisay, entered a mosque not tied to his Christian faith but significant to the social fabric of Makeni.

Just days before, he had attended a church service in Freetown, reconnecting with his childhood roots before visiting the gravesites of his parents and elder sister. Now, within the mosque, he listened to an Islamic sermon delivered by Sheikh Alhaji Mohamed Mujahedeen Bangura, highlighting themes of power, forgiveness, and compassion.

The sermon referenced the biblical figure Solomon, emphasising that true leadership should be marked by empathy for all, including the smallest creatures. Bangura urged Koroma to forgive past grievances and to pray for the nation’s peace.

In response, Koroma refrained from making a political statement, instead reiterating his commitment to faith and asking the congregation to pray for peace that begins at home and in their communities. His message highlighted the need for leaders to collaborate for the greater good.

Following the service, the day belonged to the ordinary people, many of whom reached out to Koroma with greetings and gestures of goodwill. His warm reception since his return from Nigeria on 6 September has been seen as a moment of national reconciliation.

The gathering illustrated Sierra Leone’s rich tapestry of interfaith relationships. Koroma’s presence among Muslim worshippers was a powerful reminder of the harmonious coexistence that characterises the nation’s religious life. As the former president acknowledged the role of prayer in his return, he appeared focused on what he could become for Sierra Leone, rather than what he once was.
