Vice President Deogratias Ndejembi has hailed the late Samuel John Sitta as a committed national leader, whose influence on Parliament, public institutions, and democracy is still felt today. Speaking at an event to mark ten years since Sitta’s passing, Ndejembi noted that Sitta’s time as Speaker of the National Assembly brought about significant reforms, driven by his philosophy of “Speed and Standard,” which emphasised efficiency and high standards in parliamentary work.
Ndejembi stressed that Sitta’s legacy should be assessed not just by the positions he held but also by his lasting impact on the lives of citizens and national institutions through his principles, patriotism, and dedication to the public good.
He called on current leaders to embrace Sitta’s values of good leadership, integrity, and strong institutional development. The Vice President highlighted Sitta’s extensive service in various roles, including Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Minister for Transport, Minister for East African Cooperation, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Chairperson of the Constituent Assembly.
Ndejembi added that Sitta’s contributions went beyond his official roles, particularly in safeguarding the dignity of Parliament, encouraging public accountability, and adhering to institutional rules. He urged today’s leaders to emulate Sitta’s qualities and to commit to patriotism, honesty, and public service for the benefit of future generations.
The commemoration also allowed for reflection on the principles of responsible leadership, echoing the teachings of the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who emphasised that a leader is a servant and that public office requires integrity.
