A drone strike in Al-Dibab, southern Sudan, has killed 80 people, primarily commuters returning home, according to a medical source and a witness. The attack, which occurred on Sunday evening, resulted in “50 bodies” being buried, stated Ahmed Abakar Wadi, who communicated via satellite internet to bypass a communications blackout.
Wadi reported that an additional 47 injured individuals were taken to a nearby town, Al-Mujlad, where 30 later succumbed to their injuries. A medic, speaking anonymously for safety reasons, confirmed that “a total of 80 people were killed in the drone strike on Al-Dibab,” adding that another drone strike in Al-Mujlad injured four others, who are now receiving treatment.
This incident is one of the most deadly since fighting erupted in April 2023 between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF, which governs the region, has accused the army of carrying out the strike. Wadi noted that the drone struck twice, just ten minutes apart, at a transport hub where villagers congregate after market day.
In a separate strike near the capital’s airport, three children, aged between two and six, were killed. A medical source confirmed, “Four bodies arrived at the morgue — three children and one man — due to a drone strike this morning on a house in the Nasser Extension neighbourhood,” located just east of the airport.
Overall, the conflict has led to the deaths of over 200,000 people, alongside what has become the world’s largest hunger and displacement crisis.
