Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, Sierra Leone’s former attorney-general and minister of justice, has entered his fourth night in Pademba Road prison. His ongoing detention has left many, including his colleague Saidu Bangura, struggling to comprehend the situation.
Kamara, who has held prestigious positions such as the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission and President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association, devoted much of his life to the country’s legal framework. However, his distinguished career has not shielded him from imprisonment over issues of constitutional principles.
Bangura visited Kamara and shared his distress about the situation. “Bra, wit all the sacrifices you don make for dis country, na you really dae inside prison so?” he questioned, filled with disbelief and concern.
Kamara, perceptive as ever, responded not with bitterness but with patriotic resolve, citing John F. Kennedy’s famous words, urging Bangura—and others—to remember the importance of serving the country above personal gain.
In their discussion, Kamara highlighted the essence of true leadership, which goes beyond titles and accolades. He reaffirmed the necessity for individuals to stand firm in their convictions, even when facing personal loss.
With a renewed sense of purpose, Bangura left the prison, inspired by Kamara’s commitment to Sierra Leone. Kamara’s assertion that “the Constitution must remain supreme” reinforces the message that the rule of law is paramount and applies to all, regardless of status.
In these challenging times, true leadership shines through by encouraging others to remain steadfast in difficult circumstances, a lesson Bangura took to heart during his visit.
