Hurricane Isaias is anticipated to make landfall along the US Gulf Coast, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). This storm could disrupt oil and gas production in the region.

Isaias is expected to hit either Florida, Alabama, or Mississippi on Friday night or early Saturday. Coastal regions in four counties in northeastern Florida have issued mandatory evacuation orders, while states of emergency are in effect in parts of Alabama and Georgia.

The NHC warned that Isaias will become a dangerous hurricane, bringing significant storm surges, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall to the northern Gulf Coast. Residents are urged to finalise emergency preparations to protect lives and property from the impending storm.

Isaias has strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico, located roughly 230 miles south of the Mississippi River delta, with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. This marks the first Atlantic hurricane of the season, which began on June 1. The unusually quiet season has been attributed in part to a strong El Niño, which has caused vertical wind shear that hampers storm development.

US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that federal authorities are coordinating response efforts with state and local governments. He urged those in the storm’s path to prepare accordingly.

The storm’s trajectory threatens key oil and gas production areas in the Gulf, prompting evacuations of platforms and rigs. The Marine Minerals Administration (MMA) reported that about 63% of oil production in the region has been temporarily halted, accounting for nearly 1.3 million barrels per day, while 57% of gas production has also been suspended. Offshore production in the Gulf makes up nearly 15% of the crude oil extracted annually in the US.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Simon is advancing towards Mexico’s Pacific coast with sustained winds of 90 mph. The NHC predicts that Simon, which has reached Category 1, will affect Jalisco state and could strengthen further as it approaches.
