The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes has urged Oyo State politicians to run issue-based campaigns as the 2027 general elections approach, avoiding name-calling and personal attacks.
In a statement issued by Publicity Secretary Mr Kola Olomide in Ibadan, CCII President-General Chief Ajeniyi Ajewole stressed that political campaigns should centre around policies and plans that address the challenges faced by the people of Oyo and Nigeria.
Ajewole said, “Our politicians should make their campaigns issue-based. They should stop attacking one another and calling each other names. Politics should not be about abusing or pulling down your opponents. It should be about telling the people what you intend to do for them if elected.”
He called on candidates to clearly outline their programmes, especially regarding education, healthcare, security, infrastructure, employment, and economic growth. Ajewole insisted that voters should focus on candidates’ ideas instead of getting distracted by insults.
He cautioned that political rivalry should not undermine unity and urged candidates and their supporters to exercise restraint in public statements. “We must remember that after the elections, we will remain brothers and sisters,” he added.
Ajewole also asked politicians to use their media teams responsibly, promoting constructive discussions instead of inflammatory attacks. He insisted that voters deserve to make informed choices based on candidates’ records and visions, not on personal insults.
The CCII President-General encouraged all campaign organisations to prioritise the interests of Oyo and Nigeria above individual ambitions, fostering peaceful, issue-based political engagement throughout the election period.
