President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during his visit for the U.N. General Assembly. The meeting will take place on Monday at Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s official residence, as confirmed by Mamdani’s communications director, Anna Bahr.
The two leaders plan to discuss important issues impacting the city and its residents. Although the White House acknowledged the meeting, they did not provide further details.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist who won the Democratic primary against former Governor Andrew Cuomo before securing the general election in November, has often positioned himself as a counter to Republican ideals.
Notably, Trump has shown a surprising warmth towards Mamdani, appearing charmed by the young mayor. Their initial meeting after Mamdani’s election was friendly, with Trump saying that Mamdani would “surprise some conservative people.” This was somewhat ironic given Trump’s previous label of Mamdani as a “100% Communist Lunatic” during the 2025 campaign.
In February, Mamdani gifted Trump a mock front page of the New York Daily News, which read “Trump to City: Let’s Build.” This alluded to a historic 1975 headline, “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD,” concerning President Gerald Ford’s refusal to provide financial aid to the city. Mamdani’s team explained that the gift aimed to convey optimism about federal housing investment’s potential impact on New York.
