Ohio Senator Jon Husted has responded to President Donald Trump’s comments about his physique, which Trump made during recent rally speeches.
In the past week, Trump praised Husted’s “ass” at rallies in North Carolina and Ohio. Speaking on Fox News, Husted expressed surprise at the remarks, saying they motivated him to hit the gym. “I told my wife, ‘I think I’ve got to get down to the gym and keep up my reputation! So I’ve got to keep working out,’” he stated.
Husted, who is in a tight race for re-election, indicated that he comes from an athletic family, having played college football while his wife runs marathons.
Trump’s comments, which included an anecdote about admiring Husted’s physique, garnered attention online and from TV pundits. During one segment, CNN’s Anderson Cooper featured clips of Trump discussing various politicians’ appearances, including calling Georgia’s Republican lieutenant gubernatorial nominee Greg Dolezal a “good-looking guy.”
Cooper quipped about Husted, noting, “As for Senator Husted, his ass may be hard, but his polling is soft,” highlighting that a recent CNN poll shows Husted trailing his opponent, Democrat Sherrod Brown, by five points in the competitive Ohio race, with Brown at 49 percent and Husted at 43 percent, according to a Cook Political Report poll.
