MTWARA: The Medical Stores Department (MSD) has been honoured with an award from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) for its vital role in implementing the Universal Health Insurance Programme. This recognition particularly acknowledges MSD’s efforts in ensuring essential health commodities are available across Tanzania.
The award was presented by Health Minister Mohamed Mchengerwa on 22 October 2026 during the launch of the second phase of the Universal Health Insurance enrolment programme at the Sabasaba Grounds in Mtwara Region.
At the event, MSD Director General Mavere Tukai reiterated the department’s commitment to providing quality essential health commodities promptly, thereby enhancing access to diagnostic and treatment services for Tanzanians. He highlighted that the availability of these commodities is crucial for delivering quality healthcare to those enrolled in the insurance scheme.
“MSD is dedicated to ensuring timely access to essential health commodities so that every Tanzanian with health insurance can rely on professional healthcare services,” Tukai stated.
The award emphasises MSD’s essential partnership in advancing the Universal Health Insurance Programme. While insurance coverage improves healthcare access, its success also hinges on the presence of medicines, medical equipment, and other necessary resources at health facilities.
This recognition highlights the need to strengthen the healthcare supply chain, ensuring that extended insurance coverage effectively translates into accessible services and treatment for beneficiaries.
