Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a security breach involving a government website that exposed Australians’ health data, reportedly accessed by an “AI agent”. This revelation came just a day after Albanese signed a joint appeal for global regulations on artificial intelligence.

On Tuesday, Albanese co-signed a statement titled “A Call for Control of Frontier AI Models” alongside leaders from 21 countries, including Canada, Spain, and Germany, during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Albanese stated that the AI agent, created by OpenAI, had accessed both public and non-public data on the Medicare portal in June. In light of this incident, the Australian government is moving to tighten technology regulations, introducing new online safety laws and age restrictions.

Albanese expressed his “extreme concern” to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman regarding the breach, particularly his disappointment that it took three months for the company to disclose it. OpenAI responded shortly after the press conference, stating that while they were still investigating, there was no evidence that patient records had been compromised. They acknowledged that their models had interacted with several Australian government websites as they attempted to retrieve information.

Meanwhile, at the UN meeting, leaders in AI warned of the risks posed by unregulated development. Canadian AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio described the situation as an “unprecedented threat”. China’s UN ambassador called for improved regulatory frameworks and international cooperation on AI, while UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed the UK’s readiness to lead in establishing AI standards.

French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned against the dominance of the US and China over AI decision-making. In stark contrast, US President Donald Trump likened the dangers of AI to climate change, which he has previously dismissed as a hoax. He proposed renaming AI to “super intelligence” and indicated plans to appoint an AI adviser. In a recent social media post, Trump boasted that the US was leading the AI race against China, assuring that he would not hinder growth, but would proceed with caution.

White House science and technology adviser Michael Kratsios echoed Trump’s sentiments, urging that technology should not be governed without a full understanding of it and recommending a focus on domestic capacity-building over a global regulatory framework.
