Trump Administration Defends White House Press Ban, Calls Access a ‘Privilege’
In a recent legal filing regarding the ban on three media outlets from the White House, lawyers for the Trump administration stated that journalists do not have an entitlement to access the building. “Access to the White House is a privilege, not a right,” the filing asserts.
The administration claims that the three barred outlets—CNN, MS Now, and Politico—posed a national security threat by publishing sensitive information, justifying the revocation of their credentials. Trump imposed the ban last Friday via a social media announcement, labelling the outlets as “fake news” and warning that more bans could follow.
In response, the affected publications swiftly filed a lawsuit seeking reinstatement of their access, arguing that the actions taken against them represent illegal retaliation for their critical reporting. They contend that a president cannot deny access to journalists based on disapproved coverage.
The backlash has resulted in solidarity from other news outlets, some of which have opted not to showcase images or video of the president while the three remain banned. Members of Trump’s regular TV pool, which includes CNN, have also suspended their duties in protest.
Trump himself admitted he expects to “probably lose” the lawsuit, which is being overseen by a judge he appointed.
