Zelensky Arrives in New York for UN General Assembly as Russian Attacks Continue
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has landed in New York alongside First Lady Olena Zelenska for the UN General Assembly, where he aims to negotiate a stop to strikes on the energy sector and secure a new drone deal with allies.
Later today, Zelensky will meet with US President Donald Trump to discuss a potential truce protecting heating and power facilities before winter. French President Emmanuel Macron also met with Zelensky and highlighted the urgency to halt energy infrastructure strikes, fearing millions of Ukrainian families may suffer from heating and electricity shortages.
Trump warned that Russia’s oil industry is “unfortunately out of control” and urged Ukraine to cease long-range assaults on refineries following previous phone conversations with Zelensky. He noted substantial damage to Russian diesel refineries, which is reportedly contributing to a global diesel shortage.
In a response to Trump’s post about the situation, Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s pursuit of peace and highlighted ongoing diplomatic discussions with Trump, emphasizing the necessity for strong de-escalation steps.
Meanwhile, in the EU, top diplomat Kaja Kallas called for continued sanctions against Russia, stating they are vital in responding to the war. While tensions rise over possible sanction removals for some Russian oligarchs, Ukrainian officials condemned any proposals that could signal leniency to Moscow.
As sanctions discussions continue, Lithuania’s Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius expressed a resolve not to surrender to Russian threats, affirming ongoing military preparedness.
In more alarming news, Russian attacks in Ukraine resulted in at least five fatalities on Monday, as drone strikes prompted widespread destruction across various regions. In the northeast, a strike in Lozova killed one and injured three, while further south in Nikopol, another drone attack killed a car driver.
As the conflict persists, Zelensky’s visit and the leaders’ discussions at the UN will focus on urgent plans to support Ukraine through the ongoing energy crisis.
