President Julius Maada Bio’s administration has dropped all charges against former President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma, a move many view as a significant step towards national healing and reconciliation. The President’s warm reception of Koroma at the State House highlighted his intent to bridge political divides.
Koroma faced charges of treason and misprision of treason over the deadly military uprising and attempted coup in November 2023, which he has consistently denied. The 72-year-old former leader returned to Sierra Leone after more than two years away and appeared at the State House looking relaxed and smiling.
Expressing gratitude to President Bio for facilitating his return, Koroma emphasised his commitment to national unity, peace, and development. “I have to be here to thank you personally for the good decision that you made about my return,” he stated proudly.
President Bio acknowledged Koroma’s importance to Sierra Leone, both practically and symbolically, welcoming him on behalf of the government and the people. Noting Koroma’s experience as a former leader, he stressed that the country’s progress relies on the collective effort of all citizens, irrespective of their political backgrounds. “God put you here before, and only a few of us can be president,” he remarked.
“I’m happy you are back home,” President Bio said, reinforcing a message of national unity. He cited his own involvement during the Ebola outbreak as an example of how Sierra Leoneans must unite during crises.
Observers and supporters believe the decision to drop charges, combined with the amicable tone between the two leaders, offers renewed hope for political stability and progress in Sierra Leone. The meeting between President Bio and the former president was marked by gratitude, recognition, and a commitment to unity, with the current administration prioritising reconciliation over division.
