Fikile Mbalula, the ANC secretary-general, expressed delight over Donald Trump’s political misfortunes in the United States, labelling himself “elated” by the Democrats’ recent victories. Mbalula accused Trump of being “very nasty” towards South Africa during comments made after casting his vote in Orange Grove.
He highlighted concerns that Trump’s allies in South Africa, including figures like Corné Mulder and AfriForum, could blame the country if the United States reduces its support. Mbalula warned that the potential end of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) would harm the ANC and South African businesses engaged with the US.
This week, the US Trade Representative announced plans to end Agoa eligibility for South Africa and Rwanda from 1 January 2027, citing practices incompatible with the act’s criteria and concerns over trade barriers and US national security.
Mbalula noted the Democrats seized control of the US Senate and House of Representatives in Tuesday’s midterm elections, marking a significant defeat for Trump’s Republicans. He mentioned that the South African government had approached the White House to rebut claims of genocide against white South Africans, but Trump allegedly refused to listen.
He acknowledged the economic implications of the Agoa decision but appeared pleased with the Republicans’ election losses. “I’m over the moon. I am elated,” he stated. Mbalula added that while Trump will remain in office for another two years, he has not treated South Africa well and criticised the Republican’s foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran, for worsening living costs in South Africa.
