DODOMA: The Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA) has pledged continued support for improved nutrition policies and legal measures to safeguard public health, following the launch of a new framework aimed at encouraging healthier food choices in Tanzania.
TAWLA’s Executive Director, Tike Mwambipile, announced that the association collaborated with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to develop the Tanzania Nutrient Profile Model (TzNPM) 2026. This model serves as a guideline for assessing the nutritional content of foods, including levels of sugar, salt, and fats.
During the National Nutrition Day celebrations in Dodoma, Mwambipile emphasised the importance of collective efforts between government institutions, civil society, and various stakeholders to tackle nutrition issues affecting public health.
“Though not officially part of the Ministry of Health, TAWLA values its partnership, working together to advocate for laws and policies that promote public health,” she stated, reiterating that proper nutrition is vital for both individual wellness and national progress.
Mwambipile highlighted the significance of women’s health, pointing out that their wellbeing directly impacts family health and national development. She described the nutrient profiling model as a valuable tool for enhancing nutrition policies and empowering consumers to make better food choices.
Despite ongoing nutrition challenges, including undernutrition and rising rates of obesity and diet-related diseases, the 2022 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey revealed that 30% of children under five are stunted, while 4% are classified as overweight.
The Ministry of Health stressed the need to transform eating habits by reducing excessive salt, sugar, and fat intake, as well as promoting physical activity. Permanent Secretary Dr Grace Magembe highlighted the role of household food choices and food preparation in improving nutrition.
She encouraged the public to embrace a variety of locally available foods and called for collaboration across health, agriculture, education, and other sectors to enhance nutrition education and encourage healthier lifestyles.
The government also introduced nutrition guidance materials for religious leaders, aimed at integrating nutrition education into community outreach.
The National Nutrition Day was observed under the theme “Strengthen Health: Eat Naturally, Reduce Salt, Sugar and Fats.” TAWLA reiterated its commitment to partner with the Ministry of Health and others to ensure all Tanzanians have access to good nutrition, regardless of their location.
