Nigerians will vote for a new president in under 100 days, facing pressing concerns over security and rising living costs. The election, set against a backdrop of increasing voter registration—now at 103.4 million, up from 93.5 million—could swing dramatically depending on turnout rather than voter opinion.

The 2023 election results indicate that while Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi maintained their respective support bases, low voter turnout in certain areas, particularly those strongholds of Obi, may significantly impact the outcome. If these areas could match the turnout levels in Kano, where voter engagement is typically higher, it could tilt the balance in Obi’s favour.

New projections suggest that if Obi’s supporters turn out in greater numbers, they could gain a slight edge with 10.14 million votes against Tinubu’s 10.06 million, while Atiku would receive 7.51 million. Conversely, if Atiku’s regions also increase turnout, Tinubu’s lead could widen to approximately 12.16 million votes, demonstrating the interconnected nature of voter engagement across regions.

Notably, the presence of a minor candidate—one that may draw votes from both Tinubu and Atiku—could further complicate the competition. For instance, a coalition involving Makinde and Bala in key states could siphon millions of votes and create a more fragmented race.

As it stands, turnout is a critical and determining factor, especially in regions like the South-East, which holds around 12 million registered voters. Historical patterns suggest that higher engagement in these areas could be pivotal for any candidate’s chances of success.

Lagos presents another interesting scenario, with nearly 7.5 million registered voters where turnout across the main candidates remains close. In this landscape, a slight change in voter engagement could have national implications.

The race is poised to remain fluid, with major dynamics hinging on voter turnout, regional coalitions, and shifts in political allegiance. Obi’s potential path to success may rely not just on his own supporters but on those of his rivals failing to mobilise effectively.

In conclusion, as Nigeria delves deeper into campaign season, the strategies employed by each candidate will be vital, especially in encouraging their bases to turn out and vote. The electorate’s composition and the mobilisation efforts of each campaign will ultimately shape the 2027 election landscape.
