United States President Donald Trump has endorsed Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the parliamentary elections on 27 October, where Netanyahu faces a tight race.
In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump commended Netanyahu as a strong ally of the US in its ongoing conflict with Iran, declaring his “Complete and Total Endorsement.” He asserted, “BIBI NETANYAHU WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”
This backing comes just nine days before the election and follows earlier uncertainty about Trump’s support. Initially, when asked by Time magazine about Netanyahu’s performance, Trump had avoided giving an endorsement, instead discussing his own popularity and security issues in the Middle East.
Although the leaders have met multiple times since January 2025, reports suggest they have disagreed on several matters, including the conflict with Iran. In June, Trump was overheard expressing frustration with Israel’s actions in Lebanon, allegedly calling Netanyahu “f***ing crazy” during a phone call. Trump had urged Netanyahu to refrain from further actions in Lebanon to maintain a temporary ceasefire with Iran.
The conflict, which began on 28 February, has impacted global oil and gas supplies, leading to rising prices and concerns about depleted military stockpiles. A Pew Research Center poll revealed that around two-thirds of American voters disapprove of Trump’s handling of the war.
As Trump’s Republican Party readies for crucial midterm elections on 3 November, speculation arises about his previously cautious stance on endorsing Netanyahu, possibly reflecting public sentiment around the US’s role in the war. Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s Likud Party faces the risk of losing the election to a coalition led by opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot.
In his endorsement, Trump claimed that Iran would inevitably pose a threat to both the US and Israel. He stated, “Unless they change their ways, rapidly, we will soon finish the job.” He emphasised that without Netanyahu as leader, the responsibility would fall on America, which he is “not inclined” to accept. Trump concluded, “Bibi Netanyahu has been Strong, Brave, and Brilliant in the face of tremendous opposition.”
