A middle school headmaster and a teacher were injured by gunfire at the Lakanal school in Aubagne, near Marseille, on Monday morning, announced Education Minister Édouard Geffray. A 14-year-old student is suspected of carrying out the attack with a hunting rifle, according to police sources.
The assailant fired several shots inside the school before being subdued by staff until law enforcement arrived, as reported by France 3 television. A third individual suffered minor injuries, but the headmaster and teacher’s lives are not in danger.
Authorities stated that the incident is unrelated to ongoing high school protests in France, with police confirming that “the middle school was not affected by the high school students’ protest.”
The Marseille prosecutor’s office has confirmed the arrest but provided no further details, while ministers from the interior and education departments are on their way to the scene.
