Speaker Thomas led a high-level parliamentary delegation to Guinea, following an invitation from Hon. Dr. Dansa Kourouma, the Speaker of the Guinean National Assembly. His visit highlighted Sierra Leone’s commitment to strengthening ties with its neighbour.

During the meeting, Speaker Thomas conveyed greetings from Sierra Leone’s President Brigadier (Rtd.) Dr. Julius Maada Bio and congratulated President Doumbouya on his recent election. He expressed hope that ongoing collaboration would yield further opportunities for cooperation in governance and economic development.

Thomas emphasised the historical and cultural bonds between Sierra Leone and Guinea, which underpin their diplomatic relations. He noted that these ties extend beyond formal government interactions and are rooted in family connections, highlighting shared surnames such as Dumbuya, Kondeh, and Turay.

In his address at the State Opening, he delivered a goodwill message from President Bio, congratulated Dr. Kourouma on his election, and praised Guinea for its recent celebrations of independence. He recognised the warm hospitality received and remarked that the gathering was an opportunity to recommit to democratic governance and national unity.

Addressing the role of lawmakers, Speaker Thomas stressed that Parliament is vital for representing citizens and enforcing accountability in governance. He urged parliamentarians to prioritise national development over political divides, advocating for tolerance and respect for democratic values.

He pointed out regional challenges like economic issues, insecurity, climate change, and the need for sustainable development, underscoring the importance of cooperation among West African nations to tackle these problems collectively.

Speaker Thomas called for enhanced parliamentary cooperation between Sierra Leone and Guinea, particularly through committee exchanges and sharing legislative practices. He highlighted that this collaboration would foster legislative improvements and contribute positively to regional stability and economic progress.

He also mentioned the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in enhancing regional integration, encouraging both institutions to pursue practical cooperation for citizens’ benefit, including better governance and stronger democratic frameworks.

The meeting with President Doumbouya and participation in the State Opening underscored the significance of parliamentary engagement in fostering relations between the two nations. Both countries share deep historical and socioeconomic ties, making cooperation crucial in areas such as governance, trade, and security.

Concluding his address, Speaker Thomas expressed confidence in the future of Sierra Leone-Guinea relations, pledging continued friendship and partnership. He conveyed a vision of walking together towards peace and collective progress, reaffirming the aspiration for stronger cooperation to support democracy and sustainable development across the region.
