Freddie Jackson, the American R&B singer, passed away on Tuesday, 6 October, at the age of 70. His family announced the news in an Instagram post, expressing their deep sadness over his passing, stating, “It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Freddie Jackson, who went home to rest last night.”
Jackson was best known for hits like “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake),” which topped Billboard’s R&B chart for 16 weeks in 1985, as well as “You Are My Lady” and “I Could Use A Little Love (Right Now).”
Born in Harlem, New York City, Jackson discovered his singing talent at the White Rock Baptist Church. He later performed in nightclubs, where he was noticed by singer Melba Moore.
In their tribute, Jackson’s family described him as a “kind, generous soul” who had an immense love for his fans, family, friends, and music. “For decades he gave us the songs that became the soundtrack to our love stories, our celebrations, and our most treasured memories. That gift will live on forever,” they said.
They also thanked those who sang along, danced, or felt an emotional connection during his performances: “You were family to him, and he carried your love with him always.”
Tributes from fellow musicians and industry colleagues have been flooding in on social media. Jackson’s death represents a significant loss in the world of romantic soul music, but his unforgettable songs will continue to resonate with those who grew up listening to them.
