At least one person has died and seven others have been injured following an attack on a vehicle near the Total Filling Station at Yelwa Club junction in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The assault, which took place on Sunday at approximately 5:30pm, targeted herders returning to Bassa LGA after visiting the cattle market. Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, confirmed the incident and expressed his outrage, urging security agencies to locate and apprehend those responsible.
Babayo noted that the injured had been taken to hospital. He highlighted that this attack is part of an alarming trend, referencing a previous incident on 20 September 2026, where five Fulani herders were killed near the Kassa community in Barkin Ladi while returning from the same market. He also mentioned another attack in December involving Fulani herders near a filling station.
“This tragic event is yet another attack on innocent individuals simply returning from their lawful business,” he said. “The ongoing violence is unacceptable, and no Nigerian should face harm because of their ethnicity or line of work.”
He called on authorities, including the Plateau State Government and the Nigerian Police Force, to enhance security along routes to the market and to take firm action to prevent further incidents. Babayo urged members of the community to remain calm and nonviolent, trusting that security forces will conduct a thorough investigation and ensure justice.
The spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Polycarp Oteh, and the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alabo Alfred, did not respond to requests for comment.
