Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has spoken out about the lack of support from some former colleagues, friends, and family during his challenging times, asserting he holds no ill will towards those who have distanced themselves from him.
In a statement titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath,” posted on his X account on Wednesday, El-Rufai reflected on his past support for various individuals and causes, driven by his Islamic faith and personal values rather than a desire for recognition or reciprocation.
“I’ve stood by people and causes in difficult times at a personal cost, not expecting praise or gratitude, but because I believed it was right,” he said.
He acknowledged that those he has helped are free to decide how to react to his current situation, whether they choose to speak out, remain silent, or distance themselves from past relationships.
“They can make their own choices now that circumstances have changed. Some may voice their support; others might not. Some might even deny our past connections,” he noted.
El-Rufai also expressed that recent hardships have prompted him to reflect on his relationships. “Adversity reveals the true nature of relationships,” he remarked, emphasising that his reflections should not be seen as a judgement of others.
“I have no regrets about supporting people when I believed it was right, and I bear no resentment towards those who do not reciprocate,” he stated.
Regarding any perceived wrongs against him, he maintained that he seeks neither revenge nor retribution, leaving ultimate accountability to Allah.
“My priority is to stay at peace with my conscience and with Almighty Allah. In the end, we must all live with our choices, and my only concern is to maintain that peace,” El-Rufai concluded.
