Panic has struck the Ogoda community in Ahoada West Local Government Area, Rivers State, after the decomposing body of an unidentified young woman was found on the riverbank. The woman is believed to have been abducted and murdered for ritualistic purposes, with some body parts reportedly missing.
Security agencies, along with Ahoada West Local Government Chairman Eugene Epelle, recovered the remains on Sunday afternoon. Speaking at the scene, Epelle condemned the incident and vowed that those responsible would face justice.
“I completely condemn this act. I will ensure a thorough investigation, and anyone involved will be prosecuted. This will not just be an investigation; it will go to court to seek justice for this lady,” he said. He also urged the community to remain calm, promising enhanced security.
Chief Tom Obutu, the Paramount Ruler of Ogoda, expressed concern over the heightened fear among residents. He claimed the woman was taken by a group of boys from a neighbouring community, who killed her and mutilated her body before disposing of it in the river.
Obutu described the brutal nature of the crime, stating, “About five boys conspired to abduct a girl from Ahoada East to Ogoda community, after which they killed her. They removed her breast, private parts, and heart before dumping her in a stream near the village.” He reported the incident to the police, and they later went into the swamp to recover the body.
PUNCH Online reports that the woman’s remains have been taken to a mortuary, but her identity has not yet been confirmed. State Police Command spokesperson Blessing Agabe confirmed that an investigation is underway. “We are still working to identify the woman and apprehend those responsible,” she stated.
