Donald Trump proclaimed the start of a new “golden age of America” in his final appeal to voters before the recent midterm elections. He downplayed ongoing conflict in Iran, stating “we’ve done very little fighting,” and boasted about the stock market reaching 88 all-time highs, claiming the US had become “the hottest country anywhere in the world.”

In a remarkable speech at the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool, Trump asserted, “We’ve achieved more in less than two years than any administration in American history” and insisted he had kept more promises than he made. As voters prepared to cast their ballots across hundreds of congressional races, Trump urged them to “pretend I’m on the ballot” and to consider his policies in their decisions.

Despite his claims, many voters were sceptical of his narrative. They expressed dissatisfaction with the Iran conflict and did not feel they were living in a “golden age” as they faced rising costs for fuel and groceries. Some voters acknowledged that they saw Trump’s agenda as being on the ballot, which affected Republican candidates negatively.

Tom Galvin, a Republican supervisor in Arizona, said that essential issues for his voter base had been neglected, citing unfulfilled promises like the release of the Epstein files and inflation control. Trump maintained his defiance, promoting Stephen Miller, a controversial figure from his administration, to chief of staff and stating on Truth Social that had he been on the ballot, they would have won “in a landslide”.

In Tuesday’s election, voters indicated that economic concerns—especially affordability—influenced their choices. Many expressed frustrations with corruption during Trump’s term, the ongoing war, tariffs, and healthcare costs. Jim Conrad from Ohio mentioned that “there’s a war that nobody wants right now.” Other voters highlighted issues like the neglect of the rule of law and a focus on enriching himself rather than helping the public.

Republican candidates meeting strong opposition found that voters, who typically support both parties, wanted to signal change. Chris Madel, a former candidate for Minnesota governor, noticed significant discontent over Trump’s tenure, which he felt would negatively impact the party’s future.

Democratic candidates, adopting a more personal approach, engaged voters through town halls and local events, emphasising a desire to be heard. Rebecca Cooke, who won in a traditionally Republican district, noted that people felt ignored by the government.

In the aftermath of the elections, Republican leaders are evaluating their relationship with Trump. Galvin observed that those who either abstained from voting or chose differently were sending a strong message against corruption and a need to focus on genuine voter issues. Despite Trump’s influence, other party members expressed the urgency to address voters’ concerns sincerely.

Overall, following significant electoral losses, leaders from both parties acknowledged the need for a genuine connection with constituents to restore trust in government effectiveness.
