Sierra Leone has secured US$20 million from Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to enhance its power distribution network on the Freetown Peninsula, according to Hon. Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security.
Dr. Yumkella stated, “This investment, made possible through strong international cooperation, will allow us to construct 50km of 33kV lines, 40km of 66kV lines, and two new substations in York and Tombo. This will strengthen the grid, reduce outages, and prepare us for future growth.”
During a recent meeting, he emphasised that energy is crucial for transforming the country, aligning with President Julius Maada Bio’s green energy agenda. He noted progress towards providing reliable and sustainable energy for all.
Dr. Yumkella also urged further investment in the Northern Corridor transmission project to better connect underserved communities. He acknowledged challenges such as electricity theft and revenue losses and highlighted ongoing reforms, including the introduction of smart metering to improve service delivery.
He assured Sierra Leoneans that efforts are underway with international partners to ensure energy access across the nation. “Together, we can make this transformation a reality – for us, by us,” he concluded.
