A nationwide compliance verification exercise will be conducted by a Task Force Inspection to ensure foreign workers adhere to labour regulations governing work permits. This initiative follows a notice issued by the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security two weeks ago, reminding foreign workers of the existing work permit rules.
The Ministry stated, “This exercise is part of the Government’s ongoing enforcement of mandatory registration requirements for foreign nationals, ensuring compliance with Sierra Leone’s labour laws, particularly the Work Permit Act 2023.”
It will involve unannounced inspections at various locations, including workplaces and project sites, to check compliance with the law. Employers and foreign workers have been urged to keep all necessary labour documents valid, updated, and accessible for inspection. The Ministry warned that non-compliance would lead to enforcement actions under Sierra Leonean law, including potential penalties and business closures.
