Within a week, opposition parties in Nigeria have faced numerous challenges as they prepare for the 2027 general elections. Candidates for various positions, including president and governorship, report being subjected to harassment and intimidation, making their campaigns increasingly difficult.

According to Weekend Trust, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governs 31 states, and two opposition governors have joined the APC’s presidential campaign council.

Recent incidents include an attack on the convoy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate in Cross Rivers State. Additionally, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) faced substantial backlash while attempting to hold a rally in Sokoto, and billboards for opposition candidates were removed in Edo and Plateau States.

On Thursday, a Federal High Court in Abuja annulled the ADC’s processes that led to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar becoming their candidate for the upcoming election. Justice Peter Lifu declared that the nominations stemmed from an “illegal and unlawful leadership.” On the same day, Atiku’s campaign convoy was attacked in Kebbi State, with thugs blocking and pelting the vehicles with stones.

Political analysts express concern that these developments indicate a systematic weakening of opposition parties, which threatens Nigeria’s democratic processes. Opposition figures and civil society organisations accuse the APC of using state power and judicial manipulation to dismantle rival political structures across the nation. Critics warn that the APC’s actions are eroding necessary checks and balances critical for democratic accountability.

Attempts to obtain a response from the APC were unsuccessful, with National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka unresponsive to calls and messages. However, Morka issued a statement dismissing allegations from the ADC regarding collusion with the judiciary, insisting that accusations arise only when court rulings go against them.

Morka emphasized that the ADC’s leadership could appeal the court’s decision if dissatisfied, and a senior APC member dismissed opposition claims, stating they must provide evidence linking the APC to their issues.

In cities like Kaduna, Gombe, and Kano, opposition parties report difficulties in securing venues and materials for campaigning, with alleged harassment from APC supporters. The situation is described as exacerbating tensions and endangering public safety. For instance, parties in Gombe State claim their campaign materials are being destroyed, and members face intimidation.

The opposition coalition has called for a collective boycott of the upcoming elections if equal protection and safety for all candidates cannot be guaranteed. Despite these challenges, leaders are pivoting towards community engagement and social media to connect with voters directly, with plans for town hall meetings and other grassroots strategies.

Political analysts warn that the ongoing suppression of opposition parties poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s democracy, suggesting that the lack of a level playing field could lead to instability and increased political violence.
