Workers at Taraba State’s tertiary institutions have announced a two-week warning strike to urge the state government to address their demands. This decision by the Joint Action Committee of Tertiary Institutions in Taraba State (JACTI) follows the government’s failure to respond to a previous 14-day ultimatum that lapsed over a month ago.
JACTI Chairman Misa N. Gaji and Secretary Abdulkarim Z. Dangana unveiled the warning strike after a meeting in Jalingo on Thursday. The union represents five tertiary institutions in the state and has engaged in discussions with the state government for over four months seeking the implementation of key agreements affecting its members, but to no avail.
Contentious issues include unjustified salary deductions for ID cards and Health Insurance Scheme enrolment, a decade-long freeze on annual increments and step movements, and unallocated transportation relief for public servants. The committee claims the government’s inaction is a deliberate attempt to undermine their efforts and inflict suffering on their members.
JACTI warned that if the government does not respond adequately during the warning period, they may escalate to an indefinite strike in accordance with labour laws.
