Oladosu Adedolapo has been named the best graduating student in Medicine and Surgery at Edo State University. In an interview with TEMITOPE ADETUNJI, she discussed her academic journey, challenges, and future aspirations in the medical field.
Growing up in a modest household as the third of four children, Oladosu learned the value of hard work, discipline, and perseverance from her parents. She always aspired to be a doctor, a dream that intensified when her elder sister began studying the same course.
Oladosu chose Edo State University after searching for a reputable Nigerian institution that offered Medicine without imposing age restrictions. Her experience there greatly contributed to her growth, allowing her to develop essential clinical skills.
Initially, she expected medical school to be straightforward, but soon realised it demanded not only academic intelligence but also effective time management and endurance. The transition to clinical studies was particularly challenging, presenting a new realm of complex information and practical experience.
Despite feeling overwhelmed at times, Oladosu never doubted her ability to succeed. She coped by maintaining focus and seeking help from experienced peers. Balancing her studies and personal life required careful planning and consistent effort, often at the cost of social activities.
When she learned she was the best graduating student, Oladosu felt elated, knowing it was a culmination of her hard work and commitment. This recognition affirmed her belief in the importance of consistency in academic performance.
Reflecting on her success, Oladosu attributes her achievements to discipline, determination, and a genuine commitment to her studies. She emphasises the value of understanding concepts rather than mere memorisation.
The support from family, friends, and lecturers played a vital role in her journey. Through her clinical training, she learned that medicine goes beyond diagnosis; it requires empathy and effective communication with patients.
With her MBBS now completed, Oladosu views this achievement as a stepping stone rather than an endpoint. As she considers which area of medicine to specialise in, she acknowledges the need for continuous learning and experience during her housemanship.
She identifies crucial areas for improvement in Nigeria’s healthcare system, such as infrastructure, access to essential medications, and strengthening primary healthcare. Oladosu hopes to contribute to these advancements as she begins her career.
To students facing challenges in medical school, she advises that performance does not define one’s ability to become a good doctor. It’s essential to focus on personal growth and seek support when needed.
Looking ahead, Oladosu plans to enhance her clinical skills during her housemanship and beyond, aspiring to be a doctor known for both excellence and compassion. She aims to make a positive impact in the lives of her patients and within the medical community.
