Thomas Markle, the father of the Duchess of Sussex, has been arrested in the United States on charges of possessing child pornography, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The 82-year-old was taken into custody on Friday morning at the Maravida Senior Living care home in Lakeland, Florida, where he was recuperating from recent medical treatment. He was seen in a wheelchair as FBI agents led him away.
Bill Essayli, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for California, announced Mr Markle’s arrest via social media, sharing a criminal complaint that could see him facing a maximum of 20 years in federal prison. The FBI reported that it had seized 78 items from two storage units allegedly rented by Markle in the Los Angeles area, including three images showing him with underage girls. “These allegations are serious and disturbing,” Essayli stated, adding that they will prosecute to the fullest extent of federal law.
FBI Director Kash Patel commented, “Mr. Markle allegedly targeted innocent children… Our agents moved quickly to identify and apprehend him.” Mr Markle is expected to appear in court later today in Tampa.
Markle was previously reported to the police in the Philippines by his son, Thomas Markle Jr, who found disturbing images in his father’s belongings in Cebu City. This prompted an investigation that has now extended to a second set of material allegedly found in a storage unit near Rosarito, Mexico.
The retired television director has admitted to paying for sex in the Philippines but denies possessing any child abuse images, dismissing his son’s accusations as “sick lies.”
The Duchess of Sussex expressed that she was “deeply distressed” by the allegations and recalled being sent a troubling letter by the Metropolitan Police seven years ago regarding her father, which she believed should have been investigated further. The police have confirmed that they did not share these details with other law enforcement, prompting an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
In her statement, Meghan Markle emphasized her estrangement from her father and the protective measures taken for her children, stating, “Although the breadth of what has now been uncovered is more sickening than one could ever imagine, my sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served.”
Moreover, Thomas Markle Jr has now been named as a person of interest in the Philippine investigation into his father. The Philippine interior secretary has indicated that there are signs suggesting his involvement, although he is not currently treated as a suspect. Upwards of 7,000 images and one video of underage individuals were reportedly found among Mr Markle Sr’s possessions, described as “the most deplorable displays of impunity” by the secretary.
