The Eselu of Iselu Kingdom, Oba Ebenezer Akintunde Akinyemi, has filed a lawsuit against Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and several government officials in the Federal High Court in Abeokuta. His case stems from a suspension issued over allegations of his involvement in partisan politics.
On 20th October 2026, Abiodun signed the suspension letter, which was approved by the State Executive Council in line with the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021. The government cited numerous complaints about the monarch’s conduct, particularly his alleged active participation in political activities.
The government argued that such involvement undermines the dignity of the traditional institution and potentially disrupts peace among the populace with differing political views. They deemed the suspension necessary for maintaining order in Ogun State, particularly in Iselu Kingdom, while investigations into the allegations are conducted.
Oba Akinyemi claims he was not given prior notice or a chance to defend himself against the accusations. His application to the court seeks an order to prevent removal from the palace, interference in his traditional duties, and harassment by police or government officials.
In his affidavit, Akinyemi stated he received instructions to vacate the palace and cease wearing his royal insignia, following the suspension letter. The court will rule on his application on 11th November 2026, after hearing arguments from his lawyer, Dele Fadesere, who asserts that the monarch’s rights must be protected during the legal process.
