Sierra Rutile’s management met with Employment Minister Umaru Napoleon Koroma on November 4, 2026, to congratulate him on his new role and discuss significant labour issues affecting the company.
During the meeting, CEO Lima Sufian-Kargbo emphasised Sierra Rutile’s commitment to collaborating with the Ministry, particularly on local content compliance, redundancy, and end-of-service benefits. He expressed concerns regarding a redundancy exercise conducted in May, which affected 14 managers, and the need to balance workforce demands with job opportunities for local communities in Area One and Area Five.
In reply, Minister Koroma reiterated the government’s aim to maintain a fair relationship between employers and employees, highlighting the importance of both parties for a sustainable labour environment. He noted that the issue of end-of-service benefits for the affected managers is currently with the courts, and the Ministry is awaiting guidance from the Attorney General’s Office on relevant legal interpretations.
Koroma also mentioned ongoing discussions with the Employers’ Federation and the Labour Congress regarding the implementation of Section 25 of the Employment Act, which aims to establish a mutually beneficial compliance framework. He reassured the delegation of the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to dialogue, collaboration, and the effective enforcement of labour laws to protect workers, support employers, and encourage job creation.
