Donald Trump revealed the results of a $14 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool in Washington, DC, during what is likely his final press conference before the midterm elections. With polls suggesting many voters believe the President is overly focused on capital projects, Trump detailed changes to the pool’s plumbing, surrounding grass, and granite.
“This project should unite all Americans,” Trump claimed on Monday. However, that has not been the case. After showcasing the “beautiful” renovation in June, the pool turned green due to a massive algae bloom, in stark contrast to the promised “American flag blue,” with the surface also peeling.
Trump blamed vandals, but his administration has not provided evidence to support these allegations. The case against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, initially charged with causing the damage, was dropped by US attorney Jeanine Pirro, leading to Trump’s anger. Hearn’s lawyers argued that the case’s dismissal did not absolve the misuse of government power in charging their client.
On Monday, Trump accused former Democratic presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama of excessive spending on past renovations and reiterated, again without proof, that vandals had deliberately damaged his administration’s work.
Twenty minutes into his speech, Trump shifted to the importance of Tuesday’s midterm elections, noting that the ruling party typically loses seats. “We gave this a very strong shot,” he stated.
Polls indicate Democratic candidates hold a slight lead over Republicans in critical races, including Senate contests in Texas, Alaska, Kansas, Iowa, and Maine. Voters have expressed dissatisfaction with Trump’s presidency, particularly regarding the economy and rising living costs, as gas and grocery prices have surged since the beginning of the year, partly due to the ongoing war with Iran that Trump initiated in February.
