Republican Senator Dan S. Sullivan has pledged to accept the outcome of the US Senate election in Alaska, despite the Justice Department’s lawsuit aimed at decertifying the results if he loses. Speaking to CNN, Sullivan, a supporter of President Donald Trump, stated, āIām going to accept the election results.ā
His commitment comes just days ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress. Sullivan expressed confidence in his campaign, accusing his Democratic challenger, Mary Peltola, of cheating. He claimed, āMy opponent and [Senate Minority Leader Chuck] Schumer are showing complete disrespect for Alaskans… they had to cheat, and now thatās been exposed.ā
A recent report by the New York Times suggested Peltola’s campaign helped a retired teacher, Dan J. Sullivan Jr, enter the race as a spoiler candidate to siphon votes from the senator. This allegation seems to have spurred the Trump administration’s legal efforts to prevent Alaska from certifying the election results if Sullivan is defeated.
However, on Sunday, a US District Court judge dismissed the lawsuit, citing it as āinfeasibleā since many ballots had already been cast and could not be verified separately by voter identity. The judge questioned how the court-ordered āinvestigationā could maintain voter secrecy.
Peltola has denied any involvement in recruiting the other Sullivan, labelling it a distraction from pressing issues like rising prices stemming from international conflicts. When asked about the potential involvement of her campaign, she said, āI honestly have no idea.ā
Senator Sullivan, unconvinced by her denials, responded, āThere is no way this went on for a year that they werenāt informing her… She got caught lying.ā
The Senate race in Alaska is one of seven crucial contests that could determine whether Republicans retain their majority in Congress. Both candidates are actively campaigning across the state. On Saturday, Sullivan participated in a ātrunk-or-treatā event in Anchorage, where he joked about his costume being āthe real Dan Sullivan.ā
