Andy Burnham’s suggestion of a formal apology regarding the UK’s role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade has garnered support from Caribbean leaders, although disagreements on reparations persist.

Barbados’ Prime Minister, Mia Mottley, praised Burnham for recognising the “brutality of the trans-Atlantic slave trade” and his willingness to engage in structured dialogue on the matter. However, she noted significant differences regarding reparations, stating, “Those differences should not prevent progress on health, education, tackling poverty and inequality, and fairer debt terms for vulnerable states.”

Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, described Burnham’s remarks as a “significant and welcome development.” He reiterated the call for reparations while emphasising the need for continued discussion.

Burnham expressed his readiness to listen to calls for a formal apology but maintained that reparations were not the “right answer.” In an article for The Guardian, he stressed the importance of acknowledging Britain’s “complicated history” to strengthen relations within the Commonwealth of 56 nations that emerged from the British Empire.

While on a visit to the Caribbean, King Charles faced demands for both an apology and reparations. Though he acknowledged the “great suffering and injustices of the past,” he did not issue an apology, aligning with current UK government policy, which refrains from such acknowledgments.

In his column, Burnham stated, “The Britain I believe in is confident, decent and brave. We led the world in abolishing slavery – and we can show leadership again today.” He proposed initiating a structured dialogue with affected communities but excluded financial compensation, asserting that “British people today” cannot be held accountable for historic injustices. Instead, he aims to reform debt conditions for the poorest Commonwealth nations with support from former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Badenoch Defends Tory Policies Amid Slave Trade Discussion

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch defended the Conservative Party’s plans to scrap inheritance tax on family homes during her appearance on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, countering claims of delayed defence spending by asserting that the party’s primary commitment to voters lies in “fiscal responsibility” and “living within our means.” She mentioned that £70 billion could be saved, primarily through cuts to welfare programmes and a reduction in the civil service.

Badenoch also critiqued Prime Minister Burnham’s suggestion of a formal apology for the UK’s involvement in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, reiterating that an apology would be powerful but would not lead to financial reparations.
