As Global Handwashing Day is observed, stakeholders in Ethiopia are intensifying efforts to enhance hand hygiene systems, vital for public health and disease prevention.

In Addis Ababa, representatives from government bodies, development partners, civil society, and media convened to discuss findings from the Hand Hygiene for All (HH4A) Enabling Environment Assessment and plot actions for improving hand hygiene across community settings.

Participants, including officials from the Ministries of Health, Water and Energy, and Transport, as well as organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF, and WaterAid, reviewed existing progress and challenges in promoting sustainable hand hygiene practices in households, schools, workplaces, and public spaces.

The workshop analysed governance, financing, and capacity challenges affecting the implementation of hand hygiene initiatives. Hand hygiene is recognised as a highly cost-effective measure to prevent infectious diseases and enhance community resilience. Celebrated on 15 October each year, Global Handwashing Day reminds us that handwashing with soap is a straightforward yet effective way to save lives and improve health outcomes.

The discussions reinforced the necessity of translating global guidelines into actionable steps that increase access to handwashing facilities, encourage behavioural change, and bolster national systems.

Waltaji Terfa Kutane, Health and Environment Officer at WHO Ethiopia, stated, “Hand hygiene is a highly cost-effective way to protect health… Yet attention too often fades once the emergency passes. We need sustained political commitment, dedicated financing, and clear accountability.”

Participants identified barriers to HH4A implementation, including inadequate political commitment, weak accountability, fragmented funding, and insufficient technical capacity. While hand hygiene gains attention during health emergencies, ongoing investment remains crucial.

To overcome these challenges, stakeholders proposed priority actions, including high-level advocacy, better integration of hand hygiene into various sector plans, and enhancements to data collection and analysis systems.

The workshop also encouraged revitalising multisectoral coordination and collaboration across health, water, and education sectors, emphasising the need for consistent standards in hand hygiene implementation.

Looking ahead, the stakeholders committed to maintaining momentum through continued dialogue and partnership, with recommendations from the workshop set to be presented to ministries and decision-makers.

As Ethiopia marks Global Handwashing Day, the event highlights the nation’s determination to prioritise hand hygiene, essential for preventing infectious diseases and building healthier communities better prepared for future health emergencies.
