Harry Kane has realised his ambition of winning football’s highest individual honour by claiming the Ballon d’Or. The Bayern Munich and England striker is the first Englishman to win the prestigious award in 25 years, following Michael Owen’s victory in 2001.
“Wow, wow, wow!” Kane exclaimed as he accepted the award in London. “I am almost speechless. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I can imagine it was tough this year with so many world-class players in the room. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees tonight. Determination and hard work really can achieve great results.”
In the women’s category, Spanish midfielder Alexia Putellas won the Ballon d’Or Feminin for the third time following an impressive season with Barcelona.
Kane’s 2023 move to Bayern brought him the trophies that had previously eluded him. In the 2025-26 season, he scored 61 goals in 51 matches as Bayern secured a domestic league and cup double. His prolific performance established him as Europe’s top goalscorer.
Kane also played a pivotal role for England during their World Cup campaign, scoring six goals and leading the team to the semifinals, demonstrating both his finishing prowess and leadership.
The award signifies the culmination of an extraordinary journey. Kane, once loaned out as a young player at Tottenham Hotspur, has transformed into one of the most complete forwards of his generation.
His achievements are a testament to consistency and intelligence in a sport often defined by flair. He finished the season with an astounding 73 goals for club and country, contributing significantly to Bayern’s success and England’s progress in the World Cup.
The competition for this year’s Ballon d’Or was fierce, with Kylian Mbappe setting World Cup scoring records and Lamine Yamal leading Spain to victory. However, voters ultimately recognised Kane’s consistent excellence throughout the season.
At 33, Kane has added the Ballon d’Or to his legacy, already established as England’s all-time leading scorer and record World Cup scorer.
Putellas received her award after helping Barcelona secure a treble in the 2025-26 season, along with the Spanish Super Cup. She recently moved to Women’s Super League side London City Lionesses after 14 years at Barcelona.
