The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has praised the Judiciary, led by Chief Justice Komba Kamanda, for approving the live broadcast of the upcoming Supreme Court hearing on constitutional matters, set for Wednesday, 7 October 2026.
SLAJ welcomed the decision on Monday, 5 October 2026, calling it a vital move for transparency and public access to justice, acknowledging the significant role journalists play in keeping citizens informed.
The approval came after SLAJ formally requested the live coverage on 21 September 2026, highlighting the national importance of the constitutional issues to be considered by the Supreme Court.
SLAJ noted that the Judiciary’s approval includes conditions to maintain the dignity and integrity of the Court during the proceedings. Ten media outlets will be accredited to cover the hearing inside the courtroom, with SLAJ collaborating with the Sierra Leone Court Reporters Association and the Judiciary’s Communications and Public Affairs Unit to ensure compliance with the Court’s stipulations.
Members of the public and journalists not included in the accredited list will be able to watch the proceedings live via major television networks. Additionally, the Independent Radio Network (IRN) has received approval to broadcast the hearing through its network of over 40 radio stations across Sierra Leone, broadening access further.
SLAJ highlighted that this approval reflects the Judiciary’s recognition of the media’s role in enhancing transparency and accountability in the justice system. Chief Justice Kamanda’s decision showcases a commitment to open governance and increased public access to justice while maintaining the Court’s authority.
However, strict conditions have been set for the live coverage. Media outlets and journalists are prohibited from offering commentary or analysis on the constitutional matters while the case is ongoing. Still photography will also be disallowed in the courtroom.
SLAJ urged all participating media to maintain high standards of professionalism, accuracy, and impartiality in their reporting, respecting the Court’s authority and decorum. The Association expressed gratitude to the Judiciary for facilitating broader public access to significant proceedings and pledged to closely collaborate with the relevant bodies to ensure the live coverage adheres to the Court’s requirements.
