DAR ES SALAAM: The number of people living with diabetes in Tanzania is rising, according to the Tanzania Diabetes Association (TDA), while public awareness of prevention remains low.
TDA Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Filbert Nyoni spoke at the 13th Health Conference today. He highlighted ongoing efforts to educate the public, but noted that challenges persist in informing patients about managing their condition and preventing serious complications, such as amputations and issues with kidneys and eyesight.
Nyoni reported that the TDA is collaborating with the government to enhance public knowledge through scientific discussions, regional and district health teams, public meetings, and radio and television programmes aimed at reaching a broader audience.
He also pointed to unhealthy lifestyles as a major contributor to the rising number of diabetes cases and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Many individuals fail to exercise regularly, and the consumption of unhealthy foods is on the rise. Smoking and excessive alcohol intake further increase these health risks. Nyoni urged the public to adopt healthier diets, engage in regular physical activity, and make lifestyle changes to lower their risk of developing diabetes and other NCDs.
